New Opportunities for Homeschoolers

It is with great joy and excitement that we announce the following opportunities for growth and recognition for LEAH homeschoolers in our region:

First, we are in the process of becoming a charter member of Eta Sigma Alpha, the National Home School Honor Society. It is the only homeschool honor society, and the only honor society that homeschoolers qualify for. Benefits include certificates, special tassel and honor status shawl for graduates, pins, and more. The purpose of the Xi Kappa chapter of the National Home School Honor Society shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among home school students. To achieve this purpose, Xi Kappa Chapter of the National Home School Honor Society shall provide opportunities for the development of leadership and service. Xi Kappa chapter shall encourage the development of an intellectual climate that will stimulate the exchange of ideas and ideals, foster scholarship, and promote academic excellence. Xi Kappa chapter shall also advocate homeschooling as a viable and successful educational methodology and act as a liaison for homeschooling to the general public, colleges/universities, and the media. Chapter meetings will be held quarterly and eligibility requirements include the following:

  1. Standardized test results (IOWA, Stanford, or CAT) which show 90% or higher on composite battery, SAT results of 1800 or higher, or PSAT of 180 or higher.
  2. GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  3. Must be doing highschool work and homeschooled at least 80% of courses.

Please have interested families contact us directly for the start up of this chapter. A PDF version of the application is downloadable by clicking here.

Also...
Open to all LEAH chapters...
Sponsored by South Shore LEAH, this Bowling league meets on Monday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at San-Dee Lanes in Malverne (exit 17S off the Southern State Parkway in western Nassau County, L.I.). This will be our third year running the league and we would like to invite other LEAH chapters to join us. Children 1st grade through 12th grade are welcome. Teams will be divided accordingly.

The cost is $7 per week, which entitles each bowler to two games, shoes, a trophy, and pizza party at the end of the season. The season will probably run from October through May, with a couple of weeks off mid-year. We are also considering holding the league every other week, if that is more desireable to most parents involved.

Please contact Barbara Korycka as soon as possible if you are interested, or have any questions (sooocreative2002@yahoo.com or 516-812-7726). We are looking for regular participation, good sportsmanship, and kids who want to have fun and socialize! Parents will be asked to stay and help the coach supervise on a rotating basis (probably just once every other month, depending on how many families participate).
