Teen Workshop Descriptions
Cinderella Lied
- Generations of Virtue
In a culture saturated with lies, it is difficult to distinguish what is the real truth. There are lies that we have believed since childhood. These seeds were planted when we were young and now bear fruit in the teen years. Combat the lies of our culture as we prune these thorny thistles and plant the truth of the word of God.
Braveheart
- Generations of Virtue
Who has your heart? As a teen, you have ample opportunity to grow in the Lord and to awaken love for Him instead of for other people. While our culture is constantly trying to awaken premature romantic desires in young people, God wants to capture the hearts of His children.
Who Will Win the Popularity Contest?
- Generations of Virtue
Our culture is gripped with popularity and the obsession to fit in. The enemy has drawn his battle lines for our generation: division at any cost. People-pleasing and racing to the top only means putting others down in your quest for cool. But Christ longs for us to forsake all in passionate pursuit of Him. It's His desire that we are "in it, not of it". So which will you choose: The world's fading applause or Christ's eternal approval?
Time's a-Wastin'
- Generations of Virtue
True character is who you are when no one is watching. So who do you become? The enemy of our soul wants to steal our time and focus- destroying our future. Now is the time to give all to God.
Becoming an Intentional Christian
- Patrick McNally
Patrick is the Director of Catalyst Ministries and a 20 year veteran of youth ministry. His passion is to encourage teens and families to live wholeheartedly for the Lord. Patrick will be sharing with the teens about being an intentional Christian. You can't be a world changer unless you intend to be one!

Something Special for Our Graduating Seniors
All current LEAH member families are eligible to participate in our annual LI/NYC LEAH commencement ceremony. This ceremony gives parents the opportunity to honor their graduates by presenting them with certificates of completion and provides a time of celebration for the family. Although participation by families of seniors required registration, this event has open attendance for visitors. It's a great opportunity for LEAH parents of teens to see what a LEAH graduation ceremony is like!
The deadline (February 29) for registering for this year's commencement has passed, and registration for this event is now closed. Although this deadline is passed, please keep this opportunity in mind for future graduates from your home school.

Though we may feel invisible, God always sees, knows, and blesses all invisible women.

Keynotes:
**Keynotes are for everyone**
Keynote Session - Friday Evening
Educating Our Own Minds: How to Teach Ourselves as we Teach Our Kids - Susan Wise Bauer
Educating our children involves educating ourselves. That means gaining confidence in our own intellectual abilities, rather than relying solely on "experts." Come discover a plan for self-education in the classical tradition, including scheduling for busy adults; setting up a reading plan that involves understanding, analyzing, and discussing literature; and mastering the skills needed for reading classic fiction and nonfiction.
Keynote Session - Saturday Morning
Impacting the Culture--Changing the World - George Sarris
During the last forty years, the values of our American society have strayed further and further away from Biblical standards, while the efforts by Christians to impact the society have been generally ineffective. We have Mega-churches with thousands of attendees, large ministries with multi-million dollar budgets, seminars, crusades, concerts and large arena events with wonderful preachers, teachers, and entertainers. But, all the indicators in the society about values have moved in the wrong direction. This address looks at the causes of why this situation has occurred, and how homeschoolers hold the key to successfully impacting the culture so that the world will be changed.

Includes suggestions on how to use these writing and thinking skills in every area of the curriculum, as well as evaluations of specific writing programs and recommendations.
(B, V)
What is "Critical Thinking," and Can Anyone Do It?
- Tom Clark
Are your students learning passively, or are they involved in concept development? Are they figuring things out for themselves, or are they just learning tricks and shortcuts? Come brainstorm with Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", as he humorously explores the reasons instruction can be difficult, finally arriving at a set of benchmark strategies which help students "think" critically and analytically. (This is a non-product-related, instructional workshop, suitable for all levels K-12, and is appropriate for beginning and veteran homeschoolers alike.)
(B, V)
Developing Life-Long Readers

"...a basic and compelling reason for education - the rigorous training of the mind - is so that a person can read the Bible with understanding." ~John Piper

Capturing the Heart of Your Child
- Deb Dufek
The ultimate desire of our lives for our children is that they will come to know Jesus; to love and serve Him, and be able to walk alone with their Savior. God's love, in us and through us, is what He will use to capture the hearts of our children! The scarlet thread that should run through the years of our parenting is this: that our children know that they are loved right now, just the way they are, for who they are, despite their flaws. They should know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that our love is unconditional. In this session, Deb opens her heart, sharing from her forty years of parenting experience. Together we will explore new ways to draw the hearts of our children to our hearts, leaving this time together with renewed hope and expectant hearts for what the Lord will do…not only in our precious children, but also within our hearts, as well! Moms (and dads) in all stages of parenting are welcome at this session.
(B, V, W, M)
Organizing Your Homeschool
- Suzan Sarris
Why do we teach our children at home? Is giving our children a better education that they would get in an institutional school the only reason? Or, are we involved in a family restoration movement that sees education as one aspect of a much larger picture of using our homes to accomplish the exciting purposes of God? In this workshop, Suzan Sarris will share practical steps to help us develop a vision for our homes, and the necessary qualities to make the vision become a reality instead of just a dream.

Topics discussed will be determined by the audience, and may include division of fractions and multiplication of decimals (using those mindless rules), long-division, story-problems, positive and negative numbers, and numerous others, all of which seem to indicate that Mathematics is just naturally "difficult". (This is a non-product-related, instructional workshop, suitable for all levels K-12, and is appropriate for beginning and veteran homeschoolers alike.)
